"I have to put that in a poem."
But then the words slipped from memory,
and I couldn't recall what had been
Were the words so important then, if
I had failed to memorize or memo them?
Even the columned lights of Bloomingdales
(she said: "I love the lights at night.")
couldn't illuminate my failing thoughts
And the walk through the Upper East Side,
with its summertime stragglers and
crowded taxi cabs couldn't bring back words
No matter how far I walked,
the what-might-have-been was gone
