Summer Girls

Lily Cole Takes a Trip - Tim Walker, British Vogue 2005
Three girls in blue summer dresses
at ease stroll side by side, cardigans
unbuttoned, slip off shoulders in the chilling dusk

One girl’s hand holds a square wooden frame,
one that may find its way to a living room wall,
the others half-close their eyes and stretch forward, feet flat

Cloth bags swing gently, filled with carrots and cheese,
bottles of oil and wine, are weightless, shiftless
against the hands and the wind that curls

Picks at the hair, softly, tendril by tendril
Mouths wide open—laughter—are ready
to receive the dwindling twilight

The girls, in their shaded and patterned blue,
pass through the settling summer, the paling light,
unaware, a hazy whispering of cotton and linen
