Making Progress

Seek Me - Dan-ah Kim
Walking across 30th street,
I ask the inevitable:

"How are you?"

Words seem to mean the most
when strewn together in threes

You reply: "I'm starting to be better,
than I was before."

For a few moments, we talk about
how the heart has advanced,
how the months have allowed the heart
to pace again, to beat-beat-beat again

"I've mourned and I've been sad, but
now I have to allow myself to get angry...
but I don't want to be angry."

And I wonder: Is love truer because it refuses
to take the turn toward fury?  Or does fury
take the scraps and ashes of memories--
and burn them into a finer way to love?
