Short Story: Brooks Brothers (Part 3)

Two on the Aisle - Edward Hopper
Note: This is where the story ended.

When fall came again, the clothes usually worn in the spring would reappear, but in darker colors like charcoal, navy, maroon, and forest. Season to season, the Brooks Brothers man never wavered from his traditional sense of prep school, country club style.

Jocelyn knew this because she had once been in love with a Brooks Brothers man or, at least, she had thought herself to be in love with one. The boy’s name was Keene.

She remembered the first time she met him, and when she felt comfortable enough to reveal how they first met, later on in their friendship, he had denied any memory of it. There was a college party, somewhere, in someone’s suite.

Jocelyn noticed a guy, sitting in a couch chair by himself. Surrounded by loud music and people standing, cups of beer and vodka and other alcoholic concoctions in hand, chatting, laughing, flushed, the guy seemed strangely aloof, alone. He sat slouched, legs in khaki shorts and feet in flip-flops planted apart, his hands disappearing in the front pocket of his hooded sweatshirt, the hood itself half-covering his face. There was a sliver of a profile, what seemed like curls of brown hair protruding slightly, a pale face mottled by the red-gold-purple strobe lights sweeping the ever-crowded living room.
