Sudden Impact

She felt it in her throat,
a guttural longing

Tears waterfalled across the eyes,
pooled at the bottom lid

How did she get from there, to here?

Why did the images on TV compel
her to experience emotion she never
once knew, never once cared for

Now, she had gone soft,
from the scenes, the snipers,
the sexatics, the semi-vicious,
who shifted their frames
into her consciousness

Others’ pain was no longer removed
from her own; they filled her
with need because it was the only
feeling she now ached over, a
semi-vicious cycle of wanting,
of wanting more than she could find
