Note: From my poetry thesis, "Mementos of a Hostile City."  This is the first of 3 interrelated poems this week.


Across the rooftop, the lights are on in an apartment

I hear how the city is alive, the faint
          buzzing of planes, tires beating on
          pavement, the scraping furniture in
          the room next door
