What You Must Accept

Stairway at 48 Rue de Lille Paris - Edward Hopper
Today I removed
all the memories and
folded you away

boxed the frames—
the silver and wood ones—
of our smiling faces

Faces that give me pain,
mostly because I am
selfish with my love,
my give-and-take

I always thought—
the increasing years
would matter, but
instead we grow
individually, never together

In my dark time, my dark mood,
I feel little hope—all
I feel is a grim
determination not to give
anymore
