The Point of Friendship

Wine Shop (Le Bistro) - Edward Hopper
And Oscar Wilde said:
Friends stab
you in the front

Still the dark thoughts come:

What's the point
of people
who fade in-and-out
of your life?

Sooner or later
(more sooner than later)
friends change faces
and you are left:
with a dull ache in the heart,
a little brokenness, bits
better served for a half-heart
severed by a careless man

A careless man would have
crushed all the pieces at once--
instead of leaving a rivulet of cracks
