Ode to Cupcakes

Neopolitan Cupcakes - Wayne Thiebauld
Who doesn't love a cupcake?

Portable, handheld, and
personalized for every taste,
these diminutive delights
are the only sweets tolerated
in every unnatural frosted color

While fairy pastels and sparkles sell
best from shops around the corner, cocktails
are now paired with princesses awakening
from slippers to spiked heels

And for the semi-charming princes,
stiff liquor and dark stains menace
these petite cakes to camouflage
they were once dainties made for tea

Bite into a cupcake, whether
girl or boy, woman or man,
means treating the palate to
a memory once warm, sweet, and light
