Ode to the Aisles of Strand, VII
Milton found himself lost in paradise (a)
On his way to Jane Austen for some tea (b)
While Cervantes tried for windmill's demise (a)
Sendak and wild things set out to the sea (b)
When Woolf said she'd buy the flowers herself (c)
Forster, he searched for a room with a view (d)
As F. Scott admired Great Gatsby's wealth (c)
Balzac found himself with seamstress and shoe (d)
Lewis dared to enter a wardrobe's door (f)
But oh! Seuss didn't know places to go (e)
Bronte waited for Heathcliff on the moor (f)
While the Strand waited for booked guests to show (e)
In eighteen miles all books found residence (g)
Where written treasures still take precedence (g)

- When I was 14, I wrote my first poem, a treacly one about friendship. In high school, I began writing poems after reading Jewel's "A Night in Armor," a book that allowed me to fall in love with free verse. Once I entered college, A.R. Ammons's "Glare," an opus using beautiful, winding language, completely changed the way I thought about poetry. And I've played with words ever since.
