"Girl Reading a Letter by an Open Window"


The letter came, hand-delivered,
sealed with a circle of purple wax

When it was given to her, she slid
the letter (quickly and silently)

into the pocket hidden in
the folds of her dark dress

After chores, she went up the stairs,
closed the door to her bedroom and

moved towards the light of the open
window, took out the wrinkled letter

With head bent, she stood not listening,
behind the green bed curtain, half-drawn,

and read—read and read and re-read
the words, all the words that meant—
