that blossom with pink, its branches swathed
in thick cottony confections of a circus treat
They are my favorite flowered trees—saucer magnolias,
cherry blossoms, peach and plum, dogwood and willow
Their intricate petals are crowned with gold by the lowering sun,
but others
sleep in the backyard shadows, tipped by a gray-blue light
Spring is never spring without these slender ballerinas
in upside-down tutus, trailing their mysteries in the air,
waving their delicate beauty to the ground,
courted by the sunlight and the twilight
