Gray and Black, Wet and Cold

Today is one of those Sleepy Hollow days:

The sky is dark and quiet, and
the trees are still bare and black,
twisted and warped against a curtain of gray

The rain is almost here, but for now
they wait behind the gathered clouds,
tense with trepidation for the moment to strike

and send the thunder, lightning, and wind
down to add a layer of cold already settled
on slicked shoulders and soaked socks

forcing umbrellas to become useless soldiers
