Vintage Sherry: Quicksand

Note: Another poem I wrote during my second semester of freshman year in college.

Quicksand

My hand tries to
Brush away the sand
On the soles of my canvas sneakers
Fingers sweep over the rubber mazes
Bristles winding through the crevices

It is effortlessly prolonging

Soon I realize the sand has
Reached the insides of my sneakers
I feel my socks crunch on
Tiny, little fruitflies

I tip over my shoes
Watching the unformed
Specks of glass waterfall
But the flies are still there
Drinking in the nectars of my
Shoe sweat—Trapped in shoe lining

By this time, my pants are
Filled with rough, pinprick dots
My body has disappeared—
Swallowed—
In crystallized honey

I am trapped in a glass jar of fruit flies
