Truth That Comes in the Dark

Emilie Bécat-Café des Ambassadeurs - Degas
The color of betrayal—brown
tinges everything I remember
about you—overshadows all
the blues, my memories of you:

Sapphire sparkles at your neck,
cloud blue cotton on your skin,
fields of cornflowers in your eyes

Somehow, I wasted those years,
feeling guilty for trying to leave you—
when all you wanted was to run—
and cherry pick your own allies

Seeing you across the table, still
glittering in the semi-lit darkness, I finally
recognized who you are—you never
really understood anyone but yourself
